The Myth of Race

This Thursday, we are honored to co-sponsor the visit of Professor Dorothy Roberts.  Roberts is an acclaimed scholar of race, gender and law and has done groundbreaking work in public policy focusing on topics of health, social justice and bioethics.  Her most recent book, Fatal Invention: How Science, Politics and Big Business Re-Create Race in the 21st Century, examines the myth of the biological concept of race.

With the successful mapping of the human genome, we now know that there is no biological basis for the distinction of "race".  Homo sapiens are more homogenous than a typical wild population of chimpanzees.  Yes, physical traits may vary, but our shared genome is almost identical.  Professor Roberts argues that race is a political construct, not a biological one.  With this politicalization of race, we will continue to struggle in creating a just and equal society in our supposedly "post-racial" times.

We look forward to Professor Roberts talk and to learning how we can use her groundbreaking research and information to work towards a more equitable society for all of us.
