Giving Tuesday....and Beyond

We've been through Black Friday.  Today is Cyber Monday. Tomorrow, December 1st, is Giving Tuesday.

Giving Tuesday was created four years ago by the 92nd Street Y in New York City.  The mission was to "harness the potential of social media and the generosity of people around the world to bring about real change in their communities; it provides a platform for them to encourage the donation of time, resources and talents to address local challenges. It also brings together the collective power of a unique blend of partners— nonprofits, civic organizations, businesses and corporations, as well as families and individuals—to encourage and amplify small acts of kindness. As a global movement, #GivingTuesday unites countries around the world by sharing our capacity to care for and empower one another."

Giving Tuesday isn't just about donating money to your favorite charity or cause.  It's thinking about ways to give of our gifts and time--possibly the most valuable assets we have.  MIT's Priscilla King Gray Public Service Center can help you explore volunteer opportunities around the Boston area and the wider world.

Let's not stop tomorrow. Yes, let's make our own "why I give" videos and post on social media  and make a donation or two. However, when Wednesday arrives, let's keep going. As Giving Tuesday's website states, let's share "…our capacity to care for and empower one another."
