CityDays MIT 2016

When I was growing up, volunteering in a concrete, organized way--except for our church--was not part of my life. In addition to church volunteering, my mother would readily help neighbors and family members--a drive to the doctor's office or the market, a meal delivered. We were always exhorted to help those who were less fortunate than ourselves, but organized, community volunteering was not part of our family's life.

All that changed for me as a young adult. Moving to Boston from suburban New York, I witnessed deprivation and poverty up close and that was new for me. I wanted to help but didn't know how. Then a friend said, "Come with me to Haley House. It's a great place and you can cook and serve food for people in need." Uncomfortable at first, and then not, I found my footing as a volunteer. Having a friend along was all I needed to overcome my discomfort and shyness.

Here at MIT, the Priscilla King Gray Public Service Center is that friend. They make it so easy that there's really no excuse! CityDays 2016 is a one-day volunteer opportunity for all members of the MIT community and will take place on April 19th. As a volunteer, you can register as an individual or organize a group of friends to volunteer together.  Morning and afternoon shifts are available and the shifts usually last 2-3 hours. Transportation and lunch are provided. Easy, right?

There is something for everyone: Confirmed community partners include Cradles to Crayons, the Great Boston Food Bank, Community Servings, InnerCity Weightlifting, Cambridge Community Television, Revision Urban Farm and more.

With spring break around the corner, it's not easy to plan ahead into mid-April. However, now is the time to sign up for CityDays. Grab a friend and get going!
